Spill response in Scotland following domestic oil spill in bathroom
CTSL Spill Specialists received a call from our loss adjuster client following the policyholder's report of an oil leak in their home, located in central Scotland.
Our regional depot in Bathgate responded, and an initial site investigation discovered a kerosene spill from an oil supply pipe which ran under the bathroom floor to an oil-fired range cooker in the adjacent kitchen. The oil supply pipe failed under the bathroom floor, resulting in strong kerosene odours, both in the bathroom and migrating throughout the property.
Images show the policyholder's home during our initial site investigation:

Clean up of kerosene spill, removal of structures & remediation for policyholder in Scotland
An internal kerosene spill such as this is incredibly disruptive and unpleasant for homeowners and policyholders, who often leave their home while works are undertaken by CTSL Spill Specialists.
Our specialist remediation buildings team, comprising our own, in-house and trusted personnel, took out the bathroom's fixtures and fittings, stripping the room back to its structure. The floor was taken up, and our team then dug down to uncover the full extent of the affected area.
As we worked through the room and its surroundings, an old, disused fireplace was discovered. Also impacted by the spill, we removed the fireplace and rebuilt part of the dividing wall between the kitchen and the bathroom. All contaminated materials were removed from the property, and in-situ treatment completed which controlled any remaining contaminants and unpleasant odours.
