CTSL Spill Specialists' Yorkshire depot, led by North of England regional Project Manager Cian and Director Eve Muirhead, was appointed by our loss adjuster client on behalf of the insurer of this large commercial agriculture client in Yorkshire to attend a kerosene spill which, following an earlier clean up, continued to impact both the client's site and the surrounding environment.

Following a prompt site investigation and an impact assessment to ascertain the extent of the spill and potential harm posed to the local environment, CTSL Spill Specialists undertook removal of impacted materials and remediation of the site to safely restore agricultural operations for this leading fresh produce grower.

Initial investigation of large kerosene spill affecting agriculture business in Yorkshire

Kerosene was originally detected at a pumping station downstream of the policyholder's site, and in the drainage ditches of surrounding farmland, around two years ago. The policyholder's site was identified as the likely source of the contamination and, following investigation, a spill of around 25,000L of kerosene had been lost from an industrial fuel storage tank on site at this commercial agriculture business, flowing into ditches on site and on neighbouring properties.

The Environment Agency attended site and instigated a raft of measures to mitigate the impact of the conaminant, including the use of a network of absorbent booms, straw bales, absorbent pads and skimmers to soak up and remove kerosene from drainage ditches. These were periodically monitored and replaced as necessary, and eventually removed around 6 months later.

CTSL Spill Specialists appointed to clean up & remediate agricultural site following kerosene contamination

CTSL Spill Specialists were appointed by the loss adjuster for the policyholder's insurer around 7 months later to investigate, assess and clean up residual contamination on the site.

Kerosene contamination was identified in the policyholder's drainage ditch, and our CTSL Spill Specialists team investigated further potential contaminated materials on site.

A vacuum tanker was used to extract contaminated water from the drainage ditch, before the ditch's soils and an adjacent hedge were removed. The drainage ditch was then reinstated with clean, new material to restore the site safely.

CHF Tanks & CTSL Spill Specialists work together to remediate & restore safe fuel management to commercial agriculture business

CTSL Group delivers complete environmental protection for our clients and their policyholders. With kerosene spill clean up and remediation handled by our own, in-house CTSL Spill Specialists team, our tank fabrication division CHF Tanks collaborates with our civils and buildings teams to ensure problematic fuel storage systems are safely decommissioned, removed and replaced.

At this Yorkshire agricultural site, CTSL Spill Specialists investigated the fuel tank which had been the source of the spill, finding that this area also required complete removal of contaminated materials. CHF Tanks' team was brought onto site to decommission and remove the spill source tank, as well as 3 additional tanks, before digging out the area and reinstating with a rebar-reinforced concrete pad, which is now used for parking at the site.
